When you think about Virginia-based outfit Butcher Brown, we’re sure “deep house” isn’t a genre that crosses your mind. But the quintet is here to show you that maybe it should. The band, who last wowed us with their 2023 album Solar Music, is getting ready to take us on another musical journey this year with their upcoming album Letters From The Atlantic, and they’re channeling that particular genre with the set’s latest single “Ibiza.”
Named for the Spanish hotspot known for its festivals, nightclubs and parties, “Ibiza” finds Butcher Brown tapping into that vibe and experimenting with their sound. The instrumental cut begins with calm synths and a sultry horn riff that’s soon added to layer by layer. Various percussion elements, guitar and a host of other sounds are all served up over a four-on-the-floor kick that keeps things rooted as the music flourishes. It then all climaxes with a jazzy saxophone solo, bringing us back to Butcher Brown’s roots.
“We recorded that joint with the idea of it tapping into deep house music — the kind you’d hear in a dance club in New York or the UK,” Butcher Brown said in a press release. “We’re all producers, so we’re thinking of the samples a DJ would find and chop up into a groove. But do it all live, no samples, reimagining it in our own way. We’re paying tribute to DJs and producers that inspire us, like Theo Parrish, Jazzy Jeff, DJ Spinna, Karizma and DJ Scratch. We’re also trying to manifest our live debut in Ibiza once they hear it.”
“Ibiza” is just one of the 12 tracks that will be featured on Letters From The Atlantic. The set is inspired by the sounds of locales surrounding the Atlantic Ocean. “We want this full record to feel like you’re floating on a trip up and down the coast — from the Chesapeake Bay to New York, down to Florida and over to Europe. It’s taking you on a journey, and you can determine what each song reminds you of,” the band said of the upcoming project. And with features from the likes of Melanie Charles, Yaya Bey, Nicholas Payton and more, it’s sure to be an interesting journey.
