If you’re a true music lover, then you know that it’s a bad idea to ever miss Bilal in concert. The one-of-a-kind talent surpasses simply being defined by genre and is always electrifying to watch. The musician, who marks the 24th anniversary of his debut album 1st Born Second this year, turns in yet another great live showing by dropping by NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series to deliver songs from throughout his career.

The crooner started with a “Something To Hold.” The song, originally from his shelved album Love For Sale, gained new life last year when it was included on his live album Live At Glasshaus. This version doesn’t have the same jazzy, experimental verve of that take, but it’s infused with soul thanks to Bilal and his band (which includes singers Muhsinah and Micah Robinson). After that blast from the past, he jumped to his present with “Tell Me” from his latest album Adjust Brightness. The poetic, slow-burning cut showcased how well he can balance the vulnerable with sexy as he commanded a hush over the crowd.

He dipped back into his catalogue for the yearning “When Will U Call.” The heartbroken ballad was a highlight on his debut and remains the same for this performance, with him taking it from subdued to roaring and back in just under four minutes. He keeps things in the romantic realm for the final two tracks.

“Lay Around,” also from Adjust Brightness, shows where he’s going as he plays with song structure while keeping things rooted in his own foundations. He then takes us all the way back to his first-ever solo single, the slinky “Soul Sista.” The song, with its stimulating lyrics and undeniably sensual groove, is Bilal’s signature song and it never disappoints.
