It’s been just over two years since SZA released her chart-topping and award-winning sophomore album SOS. A possible deluxe edition has been floated ever since, with SZA stoking the fires in interviews and on social with several teases. It turns out that she wasn’t just bluffing, though. In fact, she’s finally delivered on the promise by dropping SOS Deluxe: LANA (albeit late) today (Friday, December 20th). And to mark the occasion, she’s released a double video for the deluxe tracks “Drive” and “Crybaby.”
Both “Drive” and “Crybaby” continue SOS’s melancholy introspection, with “Drive” focusing on dealing with loneliness. But instead of starring in that portion of the visual, she unexpectedly taps movie star Ben Stiller. He channels his inner SZA as he drives alone down a dark road mouthing the song’s lyrics. Ben does a convincing job of it as he channels the emotional heft of the song while swerving and spinning out all over a foggy empty road. Eventually stopping the car and doing an impromptu performance in front of the vehicle’s headlights before hopping back in and speeding off.
The camera doesn’t follow his SUV, though. Instead, it turns to an empty field where we see an insectoid version of SZA. The strains of “Crybaby” kick in as she writhes around through the vegetation. The bugged-out version of SZA — which she previewed during her episode of Hot Ones — is definitely trippy, but we don’t get to see much of her before the clip fades to black.
SOS Deluxe: LANA has a full album’s worth of additional tracks, including the previously heard “Saturn” and yet another collaboration with former TDE labelmate Kendrick Lamar on “30 For 30.” The supersized set is sure to satisfy anyone enamored with the singer.
