Keke Palmer just keeps adding more and more hyphens to her multi-hyphenate status. Her latest achievement and foray into a new field comes this month with the upcoming release of her new book Master Of Me. The book will find the 31-year-old spilling tea about her life, fame and the lessons she’s learned along the way. And, because mother knows how to market, she’s pairing the book’s release with new music in the form of her new single “The Master.”
On “The Master,” Keke reaches back to the 1990s for inspiration with a sound that cribs from jams like C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat” and SNAP!’s “The Power.” Synth piano chords and bass along with sampled drums make it feel like you’ve stepped into a dance club in 1991 while the singer kicks empowered lyrics about her journey while channeling her inner Queen Latifah.
“Born with the power like Queen Elizabeth / More Princess Diana ’cause I can’t quit / Taking all I get just to redistribute it / That’s the name of the game when you want to benefit,” she rhymes on the song’s first verse. “Those that can’t be what they can’t see / There’s a learning curve to get the inner knowing.”
Keke also pays homage to the ’90s with the song’s music video while also showcasing her many talents by adding her own dramatic flair. The clip begins with the dolled-up star making it to an audition before the song’s beat drops in. We’re soon taken to several sets that look strikingly similar to hip-hop and R&B videos from 30+ years ago. But spliced into this nostalgic trip are knowledgeable excerpts through which the singer imparts some knowledge that seems to be taken directly from her book.
We don’t know how she manages to wear all her hats, but perhaps that’s why they call Keke Palmer the master in the first place. Listen to “The Master” and watch its video below. Then pick up your own copy of Master Of Me when it arrives at bookstores everywhere on Tuesday, November 19th.
