Braxton Cook is simply impressive. First arriving on the scene as a talented saxophonist, the accomplished musician has proven that his talent knows no bounds time and again with a steady stream of exquisite releases. Now he’s back on our radar to offer us a quick musical escape with this latest EP My Everything.

The coming of My Everything was foreshadowed earlier this year when Braxton released the set’s two singles “Zodiac” and the NNAVY collaboration “Weekend.” Both songs showcased the two sides of him that we’ve come to know. “Zodiac” was straightforward jazz with bits of pieces of other genre flirtations worked in, coalescing into a very enjoyable experience. “Weekend,” meanwhile, was a laid-back slice of R&B ready-made to chill.

The other two songs on My Everything follow that same mold. The title track is a lovely ballad with a bit of rock-infusion thanks to the inclusion of a layer of fuzzy distortion on top of the lushly arranged sound bed. But its saxophone solo, along with the song’s heartfelt lyrics, that make it truly sing. “My Sun,” on the other hand, leans into jazz once again. This time, though, it’s a bit more experimental as vocals, synth bleeps and blips, and other elements are added into the mix.

My Everything may set a very chill mood, but it also reveals an intensity to the work of Braxton Cook. It’s the feeling of his focus and also his love for the craft (as well as the obvious inspiration provided by the love for his family) that make the EP worth the listen.
