If there’s one thing that’s been missing from our playlists, it’s new music from Amerie. It’s been six long years since she surprised us with the EPs 4AM Mulholland and After 4AM in October 2018. She’s been pretty quiet on the music front after that unexpected double dose, but that’s getting ready to change. She returned to the stage earlier this year, popping out at the inaugural TwoGether Land Festival and the 2024 Roots Picnic. Now the songstress confirms her musical comeback with a sneak preview of a song entitled “Undeniable” and word that she has an album on the way.
Amerie sent shockwaves through her dedicated fanbase when she recently hopped onto IG Live with legendary producer Troy Taylor. They were in his studio vibing to the melodic sounds emanating from the speakers and couldn’t wait to share the brand-new production. Although they’d just created the song, on first listen “Undeniable” sounded like classic Amerie and brought to mind her iconic 2002 debut album All I Have.
“Her voice has not changed. It’s mint condition classic,” complimented Taylor, who’s worked with R&B greats like Boyz II Men, Whitney Houston and The Isley Brothers since the ’90s. He shared that he’s been waiting to work with her for years and amassed a stack of songs in anticipation. “I’m a huge Amerie fan, like seriously, for real, for real. So it’s like making sure she sounds classic without sounding dated,” Troy explained. “She ain’t gotta do nothing but sound like Amerie.” And that she did with ease.
Amerie matched Troy’s excitement about her return to music and the new single, which they played three times back to back. The Georgetown University alumna has been focusing her energies in recent years outside of music. She’s explored other creative pursuits in the literary field as an author and with her popular online book club. She has also been busy raising her six-year-old son River Rowe with her husband Lenny Nicholson. With such a full life, Amerie could have easily kept her attention elsewhere, but music is her calling and her comeback is right on time.
“Undeniable” is the first sample of what Amerie and Troy Taylor are cooking up, and they assure us that much more is to come. The singer went on record in the video to share that her next album will arrive in 2025. She hasn’t set a release date for either “Undeniable” or the as-yet-untitled new project yet, but her fans are patiently waiting and trusting the process. Everyone is collectively just glad to have Amerie back.
