Amber Mark is a very, very talented woman. The songbird, who also writes and produces a lot of her own music, never ceases to amaze with how versatile she is with her releases. That’s especially true with her recent run of singles. Now Amber has gathered a few choice ones up, along with some new songs, to offer to the masses on her latest EP Loosies.
The set opens with the brief but undeniably sexy “Destiny’s Child.” Though it has little to do with the girl group it namechecks, it does take us back into ’80s slinky slow jam territory. From there, we’re led into the souped-up disco of the single “Won’t Cry,” which is a smash in the vein of disco divas like Donna Summer.
The set continues to dip into different pockets of her influence, with a special nod to ’80s-era R&B (“City Starlight”), ’90s house (“A Little More”) and even a little early aughts downtempo (“Sink In”). But she doesn’t just look at the past. Songs like “Wait, So Yeah” and “Stop Calling Me” clearly borrow from modern trends, but with a twist added to infuse them with Amber’s own artistic sensibility.
The throwback vibes and modern leanings on Loosies prove that Amber Mark isn’t an artist to be slept on. And with her promising that a new fuller work is on the way, we have so much to look forward to from Amber in the new year.
