Fall is about to get funky if Tuxedo has their way. The dynamic duo — consisting of Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One — are promising a funky good time with the November release of their upcoming album Tuxedo IV. The set was already teased with the jam “Back 4 More.” Now they give us a double dose with new singles “Cake” and “Think Twice.” The two singles show off the more sophisticated side of the duo’s funk, as both keep things at slower tempos while giving us flirtatious vibes.
“Cake” is a silky-smooth jam that finds the fellas letting us know that we can have our funk and eat it, too. The main premise of the song is that you can have what you want in life as long as you reach out and grab it. The uplifting message is made even more tantalizing thanks to a slippery bass groove and Mayer’s vocal that promises good times are ahead.
“You can have your piece of cake / Get into the groove and celebrate / (Have it your way),” he sings on the chorus. “There’s enough to go around / We can live it up and get on down / (Have it your way).”
“Think Twice,” on the other hand, slips into something slinkier as they propose making good on a brewing love affair. The bass is thick and the groove is perfectly chilled like a fine champagne to complement Mayer’s voice as synth and horns take things to the next level. Meanwhile, lyrically, no punches are pulled as they let it be known that it’s now or never to get this thing started.
Mayer makes things even plainer when he sings on the chorus, “Whatever it’s gonna be / As long as it’s you and me / Don’t think twice (don’t think twice) / Whatever you wanna do / As long as it’s me and you / Don’t think twice (don’t think twice).”
