To commemorate the major anniversary, she’s gifting fans with a special version of the set’s title track, which features an assist from her good friend – and our favorite play cousin on our daddy’s side – Durand Bernarr.
The twosome stays true to the original by not changing up the Prince-inspired production too much. In fact, the biggest change here is Durand himself, who takes on the opening verse and chorus with his unique vocal approach — including tapping into his enviable falsetto. His inclusion brings the song’s message, which focuses on celebrating the now despite all the adversity that life throws at us.
Teedra is also in fine form, too, sounding almost exactly as she did on the original record. This fact actually makes the song sound even sweeter, knowing that she’s made it another two decades still toasting to life and its ups and downs.
“Durand Bernarr is an amazing artist in personality, performance, on stage and on record, an amazing vocalist, arranger, and songwriter,” Teedra said of the new collaboration in a press release. “On this particular record, it really helps that he’s my friend because the song ‘Complex Simplicity’ is truly one of the most personal, yet extremely celebratory, songs I’ve ever written. He came in and did what he does best, which added more color, texture, and good feelings to a record that already felt really good. It was a seamless fit.”
