NAO Gets Vulnerable & Blooms With ‘Wildflowers’

A lot has happened for NAO since the release of her 2021 album And Then Life Was Beautiful. The British singer-songwriter not only became a mother again in the interim, but she has kept busy both behind the scenes — including writing songs for contemporaries like Jamila Woods — and with collaborations like her recent appearance on Gallant’s “Centigrade.” She’s also been working on new material of her own and is giving us a first listen with her newest single “Wildflowers.”

She turns to producers Coffee and Detonate for the single, and they give her a sound a bit more upbeat than what we’re accustomed to from NAO. The drumbeat keeps quick pace as electronic bass and synths round out the rest of the song’s sound. NAO, meanwhile, crafts an enchanting song about navigating what life throws at you through love’s strong bond.

She uses the verses to compare her love to wildflowers that grow free and speak on the highs and lows that can come. The chorus, however, gets more direct as she demands to be loved through it all.

“Time should wait for us, but it won’t / So if you really love me, then say you love me till the end of time,” she sings with urgency. “Catch me and I’ll catch you back / We’ll keep falling till the end of time / So if you rеally love me, then say you lovе me and my shattered mind.”

“A wildflower symbolizes falling in love; it’s wild, carefree, and you want it to last forever. But life and time have other plans,” NAO said in a press release about the single. “‘Wildflowers’ invites listeners to explore the highs and lows of love while embracing vulnerability.”

“Wildflowers” is the lead single from a forthcoming album from NAO, though the details on what we can expect from the project are scant at the moment. But if the sound of the single is any indication, we’re in for quite the time whenever it arrives.
