It’s been a minute since we heard from talented singer-songwriter Mereba. She wowed us with her debut album The Jungle Is The Only Way Out back in 2019 and followed it up with her EP AZEB — which featured the single “Rider” — in 2021. She’s back on the block now with a new label home and new music, dropping off her latest single “Counterfeit” for our enjoyment and announcing her upcoming album The Breeze Grew A Fire.
“Counterfeit” finds Mereba picking up right where she left off. Teaming with producer Sam Hoffman, the singer creates another chapter in her brand of ethereal soul that also has a message. This time around, she’s encouraging us to remain true to ourselves. As she blends R&B and folk effortlessly, she reminds us to stay true to our roots and not let our originality become watered down.
“You’re the original / You go, they wanna go, too / You’re the original / You never do what they do,” she sings on the chorus. “You’re the original / Don’t let them counterfeit you (Yeah, yeah, yeah) / Don’t let them counterfeit you.”
She drives the point further home in the song’s artistic visuals. We watch her looking everyday gorgeous as she goes about her day in her neighborhood. As the video progresses, though, we notice a not-so-together version of Mereba attempt to catch up to her and emulate her style. The creepy doppelganger eventually pops up everywhere she’s going. Mereba eventually gets fed up and she and her double collide, but when the dust settles, the singer is the only one left in the frame.
There are many meanings to take from the clip, and maybe even the upcoming album. “For this (album), it went back to me being on my own for the creation of a lot of the songs, and it was really important for me at this time of life because I was a little disconnected from the world, and from who I was,” the singer said in a press release. "So I was trying to find my way back to myself first. What do I like? What do I want to hear? What do I want to say to people now?”
