Kiana Ledé has been on the come-up since her YouTube cover days in the mid-2010s. Her 2018 breakout EP Selfless, which featured her platinum-certified song “EX,” put her on the charts and everyone’s radar. She’s continued her rise with her debut album KIKI, which has reached over a billion streams since its release, and her sophomore project Grudges. The singer-actress is now gearing up for the Halloween release of her third studio album Cut Ties. She teased it on Instagram before dropping back-to-back singles “Natural” and “Space and P***y,” giving listeners a taste of the raw, intimate vibes to come.
Ledé began her onslaught of new music with the debut of “Natural.” The track is reminiscent of a classic R&B slow jam as she gets sensual with her lover.
“You can play with anything you want to / I don't hesitate, I do it all with you / Feels natural, so natural,” Kiana sings on the hook. The songstress lets her partner know exactly what type of time she’s on, singing, “I’m on my back, then on your lap / You grab my neck, and I’ll do the rest / I turn around, look at me now / You in love, and it shows.” The simplicity of this track is its best quality, as it allows Kiana to get as explicit as she’d like while she sings softly.
The music video for “Natural,” however, tells a different story. The opening text on-screen reads, “Hell hath no fury like a scorned woman,” before we see Kiana singing into a mirror in a dimly lit bathroom. She’s bloody, bruised and cut as she washes blood from her hands. The camera pulls out to reveal a pair of scissors and even more blood in the sink. The last shot is of Ledé walking out of the bathroom dragging a man’s lifeless body with her.
Kiana’s second single “Space and P***y” takes on a different tone. It’s a breakup song that realistically captures post-situationship regrets. She sings about how she overplayed her role but still wasn’t chosen by this love interest. The stripped-down acoustic feel of this track allows you to feel what she’s feeling and hear the emotion in every lyric.
“I gave you space and p***y / What a lucky motherf****r / Know just how to waste a good thing / On the shelf ’til the last minute / It’s okay, I’m only pissed ’cause I loved you,” she laments before pointing out how manipulative this lover was in the second verse. “You makin’ me feel bad / For makin’ you feel bad / You knew I deserved more / All along but only gave enough to get me through the door,” Kiana sings.
Something that both of these tracks have in common is bold and honest storytelling, which Kiana Ledè always seems to do so well. You’ll feel as though you know her on a deeper level after listening to these songs. With her balance of smooth vocals and raw lyrics, Kiana Ledé consistently gives listeners something to look forward to with each new offering, and it seems Cut Ties will be no different. Given the album’s Halloween drop date, she appears to be leaning into horror with this project’s themes and visuals.
Get ready to spend spooky season with Kiana Ledé when Cut Ties arrives on Thursday, October 31st. Stream the two new singles from the forthcoming release, and watch the gory visual for “Natural” below.
