When Fantasia appeared on the third season of American Idol in 2004, she routinely impressed the judges and viewers with her vocal prowess. It was her showstopping performance of George Gershwin’s classic “Summertime” on the season finale, however, that stunned everyone and made her the only choice to win. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of her victory, Fantasia continues to stun us with “Summertime” on a reimagined rendition recorded with Adam Blackstone. They debuted the single in August during the waning days of summer, and now they’ve released a video for the track.
Filmed on location at Middle C Jazz in Charlotte, North Carolina, director 12vy captures Fantasia and Blackstone in performance at the renowned jazz club. The American Idol and world famous music director are in their element on stage together. She commands our attention and the microphone while he plays an upright bass accompanied by a pianist, drummer and trombone player.
The visual has a cinematic feel that elevates it from a simple performance clip to something closer to a concert film. Also adding a little razzle-dazzle to the production is the inclusion of a pair of dancers who cut a rug on the dance floor to the song’s swinging instrumental in between shots of the artists.
Adam Blackstone and Fantasia’s revamped version of “Summertime” was already a must-listen and now the video is a must-watch. Get into their visual collaboration right here when you press play.
