It’s been a minute since we’ve received some new-new from Tuxedo. The duo — comprised of prolific singer-songwriter Mayer Hawthorne and producer Jake One — last graced us with a full-length project when they dropped Tuxedo III way back in 2019. Since then, we’ve gotten a few one-off tracks and, of course, more than a few solo projects from Mayer. The boys are back at it again, however, and they fittingly return with their new single “Back 4 More.”
“Back 4 More” continues to bring in the noise and the ’80s-inspired funk Tuxedo has become known for. This time around, they channel a bit of Patrice Rushen with a song that definitely takes some inspiration from her seminal jam “Forget Me Nots.” Its funky bassline and staccato synth string stabs automatically remind us of the ’80s classic. They build upon that homage, though, with some rhythm guitar, piano, hand claps and stacked vocals to create a groove all their own.
The song’s lyrics move within familiar space as Mayer sings of running back to the good thing he had with a lovely lady. “I’m back for more oh / You’ve got a certain something I’m looking for,” he sings on the chorus. “I’m back for more oh / You’ve got that je ne sais quoi, baby, I can’t ignore.”
“Back 4 More” will be housed on the duo’s fourth studio album, appropriately titled Tuxedo IV. The set is sure to be doused in the twosome’s signature champagne funk and have us moving straight to the dance floor when it’s released on November 1st of this year.
