Sunni Colón has been on a roll this summer as he’s released single after single showcasing his mellow take on soul. So far, we’ve gladly received the lovely “Dream About You All Through The Night.” and the wavy “DISKO MUSHROOM.” While we wait for him to finally drop some information about his upcoming album, Sunni is already moving on to the set’s next single “TURBO.”
“TURBO” lives within the same realm as the previous singles, but the performer makes the soundscape a bit different from the other two. First, there’s the digitized guitar loop that provides the melodic throughline for the track. It’s paired with crunchy programmed kicks, snare and hi-hats, adding an interesting layer of grit to the proceedings. It also gives the song a necessary bit of bump that makes it one of the more danceable singles he’s released this year.
This one is actually light on lyrics for a Sunni Colón song. There’s only one verse to the track, which finds him singing, “Traveled the world to see you / If that don’t mean nothin’ / I don’t know.” The chorus here is what actually does the heavy lifting.
“Took a long time / I was going turbo / Faster than the speed of light / Turbo,” he sings on the chorus. “Hope you’re ready / I’ll be going turbo / Traveling through space and time / Turbo.” The lack of lyrics makes this feel like more of an extended interlude. This isn’t a problem, however, because the vibes presented here are undoubtedly magnificent.
Now that he has three singles in the ether, we think it’s high time for Sunni Colón to go ahead and drop these album details. But we’ll refrain from putting any pressure on his creative genius. Instead, we’ll cozy up to “TURBO” and look forward to what’s to come and we encourage you to do the same when you head below.
