Stevie Wonder has been many things to us over the course of his storied six-decade career. But perhaps his greatest role in our society is his role as the clarion for peace in a world that seems hellbent on exacerbating the chasms between us. The Conversation Peace singer-songwriter sounds off about the current state of the United States with his latest single “Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” and the announcement of his upcoming Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart Tour.
“Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” feels like a Stevie classic as it rolls in with gentle guitar and percussion. But it’s his vocals and lyricism that make it really sing. He uses both to ask us important questions as he points out the current ills that we’re facing in the world today.
“People pushing and shouting and fighting through the haze / And all this sadness, madness, help me take away the pain, it’s gotta change,” he sings on one of the choruses. “This can’t stay the same, so tell me please / Can we fix our nation’s broken heart?”
Stevie isn’t just putting his music where his conscience is either. His Sing Your Song! Tour is timed to take place in the lead-up to this year’s pivotal US elections, with a handful of the tour’s stops being held in cities in battleground states — including two in his native Michigan, two in Pennsylvania and stops in Georgia, Wisconsin and others. According to Variety, the legend also announced that a designated amount of free tickets would be offered “to those in our communities who are already working tirelessly to fix our nation’s broken heart.”
The tour is scheduled to kick off on October 8th in Pittsburgh, with tickets going on sale for all dates on Friday, September 20th at 12 p.m. local time. More information about tickets and the tour can be found via the tour’s website.
