Pharrell Williams has been nothing if not unconventional in the 30-plus years he’s spent in the industry. So, when it came time to tell the story of his life, why would it be done by conventional means? That's probably why his upcoming biopic Piece By Piece will be a LEGO-animated affair. And to usher us into what is sure to be a unique experience, he goes back to his roots with the film’s title track “Piece By Piece.”
The groove of the song feels right at home within Pharrell’s catalog. A slick guitar riff anchors the song while being backed up by programmed kick, snare and hand claps. It all comes together to support P’s signature falsetto as he tells his story and the sweetness of when it all pays off.
“And when it pays off, pays off / It feels so good inside / And when I told you, I told you / Ain’t happen any other way but mine,” he sings on the chorus. “I never took days off, days off /
If they hated, now they want to die / Finding a brick and where it goes to / We keep stacking high, high, high.”
The song is made even sweeter with him including the Princess Anne High School Fabulous Marching Cavaliers — the very high school band that started him on his musical journey — at the song’s close to liven things up even more.
