“Tell Me” taps into Bilal’s more intimate side, with a sound bed that mixes new age and neo-soul to create a sound the eases us into a receptive mind state. Once it gets us there, the singer takes us to euphoria as he contemplates how to unlock the desire in his lover.
He details the song’s premise at the beginning with the deft skill of poet, but he gets a tad more direct in the back half. “I’ll do you that way / If you let me inside a heart so full / What will I find / And what will you hide from me, babe?” he sings. “Don’t hide from me, babe / I’m not the monster that you think I am / I’m just a lover and I wanna love you.” The direct statement both intrigues and titillates with thoughts of what he hopes to learn as he sings, “Tell me what your heart requires.”
Longtime fans of Bilal know that the man is a master at delivering cerebral sensuality, and “Tell Me” is a welcome addition to his catalog.
