Tems is having quite the year. The singer is riding high after the release of her debut album Born In The Wild and is readying to continue thrilling audiences when her world tour of the same name resumes later this month in North America. As she prepares to rock us in the States, she gives us an unexpected visual for Born In The Wild track “Burning.”
The clip, which was directed by the artist herself, shows the singer’s journey through New York City. She walks through many landmarks, including Times Square and Central Park and even rides the subway. But rather than her having a Mary Tyler Moore hat-throwing moment, Tems seems to be lost in introspection.
The mood matches the song’s meaning, which she explained further to Apple Music. “‘Burning’ is about the feelings I felt when I first started getting popular as Tems,” she said. “I didn’t really understand what was happening, and everything was happening so fast. And it’s about me looking back on that time and realizing that we are all going through something.”
Though there is a melancholic feel to the visual, there is also joy to be found. The moment comes at the end as we watch Tems stand in the middle of Times Square. As she looks around with a more assured expression on her face, her name and image are emblazoned across the many screens surrounding her in a reflection of how far she’s come.
