Mahalia has never shied away from putting a message with her music, especially when it comes to challenging societal norms. So we’re not surprised at all that the “Ready” singer has once again used her voice to stand up for us all on “Life Size,” which happens to be her contribution to the Sprite Limelight series.
“Life Size” is all about embracing and loving everything about yourself with a special shoutout to the singer’s own Jamaican heritage. Aided by a fast-paced, dance floor-ready production courtesy of Take A Daytrip, Mahalia tells the story of how she learned to love herself. She breaks it all down through the verses, taking us from her childhood to her present day with a well-earned confidence. But it’s on the chorus where she asserts herself and provides an anthem for women everywhere.
“My body is my body / Don’t tell me how to run it / I wear it how I want it / Won’t change it for nobody,” she sings. “I got it from my mommy / She showed me how to run it / I wear it how I want it / Won’t change it for nobody.”
The song’s visual takes us to Portland, Jamaica, where Mahalia introduces us to some beautiful sights and, most importantly, beautiful people. She even stops the music at one point as she shares the spotlight with a few local women, who then tell us exactly what they love about themselves. The video’s shoot was also a homecoming of sorts for the singer-songwriter, who elaborated about the experience on Instagram.
“[G]etting to shoot this video in the birthplace of my grandma was an honour,” she wrote. “To be able to capture the beautiful women of Portland and also my superstar mummy was also nothing short of a dream come true.”
