YG Marley is coming in hot. He’s already had a massive worldwide hit with his debut single “Praise Jah In The Moonlight,” and he’s looking to follow that song’s success with his second single “Survival.” He has a great chance of lightning striking twice with the addition of his mother Ms. Lauryn Hill to the track on “Survival - Version.”
Despite its odd title, “Survival - Version” is the remix to Marley’s original featuring a verse from Hill. Her rap is the same hot fire she’s spit during recent live performances of the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and the BET Awards 2024 grand finale.
“I got moms back in the booth,” YG boasted on Instagram when the remix dropped, and he has every reason to flex. Ms. Hill gets busy on the track and reminds everyone why she’s one of the greatest to ever rock a mic, which she does with aplomb here.
YG kicks “Survival” off as usual with his vocal verse and chorus before Lauryn drops names and truth bombs throughout her ferocious bars. “That same bullet killed Lumumba / That same bullet stole Fred Hampton's thunder / That same bullet put Sam Cooke six feet under / That same bullet took Medgar Evers out / Bobby, another Kennedy, split the Nation of Islam up into enemies / That same bullet traumatized would-be men / Turned would-be revolutionaries into Barbie and Ken,” she raps with urgency.
Ms. Lauryn Hill and YG Marley have a natural chemistry as mother and son, and she’s supportive of his music from the page (she co-wrote and co-produced both of his singles) to the stage. We love to see it. Get ready for more of Lauryn and YG together on The Miseducation Anniversary Tour 2024 starting on Friday, August 9th.
