The BET Awards 2024 is in the bag, and Victoria Monét was deep in her bag like a grandma with a peppermint during Culture’s Biggest Night. Vic ended the night victorious, winning two awards – the BET Her Award and Video of the Year – for her 2023 anthem “On My Mama.” Before accepting the coveted statues, she performed a medley of “On My Mama” and her current single “Alright,” which showed why she was the clear choice to receive these accolades.
Victoria and her dancers recreated parts of the “On My Mama” music video for her live performance. Dressed in letterman jackets, jeans and oversized white tees, the dancers’ energy was electric as they followed Victoria’s lead and flawlessly executed Sean Bankhead’s viral choreography. After slickly slipping into each other’s jackets, the dancers slipped off the stage leaving Victoria by herself to question where everyone was going.
That moment signaled the transition to the second half of the performance. A flash of light appeared at the rear of the stage to reveal a white suit jacket with a blue arm band – one of her outfits from the “Alright” visual that paid homage to both Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. The camera then cut to the song’s producer Kaytranada who was on the turntables. He greeted the audience and viewers with a “Sak pase” then dropped the beat in.
Monét returned to the stage with the full white suit and a fedora on and jumped right into Bankhead’s “Alright” choreo with her dancers who were similarly dressed in dark suits. The camera focused on the dancers for a spell to give Victoria time for another quick costume change. She came out of the suit and hat and emerged in a way more revealing bikini suitable to dance in while water rained down from the ceiling.
Easily one of the best performances of the night, Victoria Monét was rewarded with a well-deserved standing ovation. In case you missed her stunning BET Awards debut, watch Victoria Monét’s complete performance below – and don’t hold your applause when she’s done.
