Sunni Colón wasn’t playing when he said he was in album mode. The singer-songwriter gave us a taste of what’s to come when he dropped the dreamy jam “Dream About You All Through The Night.” last month. Just over a month later, he returns to get us back on his wave with the adventurously titled “DISKO MUSHROOM.”
Despite the name calling back to the groovy times of the 1960s and ’70s, the song doesn’t dive into psychedelia or make us want to put on our boogie shoes. Instead, it picks back up on the mellow vibes of his previous single while adding a slight bit of bump into the musical mix. The song’s melody is based on a loop of synth piano, over which he layers thick bass, drums and a bit of rhythm guitar. In turn, he creates a funky jam meant to make heads nod and lovers sway to its rhythm.
Sunni uses the song to express feelings of love and affection to his one and only. “Disko mushroom / I could grow you / Kiss you in the palm trees / Next stop, go through / Same way you know me / Take me there just to hold you,” he sings on the opening verse. He then goes on to describe how their easygoing love can stand the test of time, proclaiming it a “forever love” in a world that seems to be on fire.
Sunni gets back in the director’s seat for the song’s accompanying visuals. We begin with the singer standing on the beach, his back to the camera, before he takes us for a swim in the crystal blue of tropical waters. We then join him and his newly blonde ’do in few of his signature, artistic shots. There’s him sitting silently in the backseat of a taxi, dancing in a courtyard and striking solemn poses in front of brightly colored backdrops. It’s just as entrancing as any Sunni Colón can be (read: very) and gives us even more of his signature aesthetic.
