The BET Awards 2024 was heavy on musical performances, and quite a few ladies showed up and showed out. Megan Thee Stallion opened the extravaganza that featured Victoria Monét, Tyla, Chlöe, Teyana Taylor and more leaving it all on the stage and setting social media ablaze. When it came time for the show to end, producers called on Ms. Lauryn Hill to shut it down with a grand finale in celebration of her classic album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill and a sneak peek of The Miseducation Anniversary Tour 2024.
This year’s BET Awards clocked in at almost four hours long, which made it close to midnight on the East Coast before Ms. Hill graced the stage. As late as it was, however, it was right on CP time for the rapper and singer.
Lauryn was a welcome albeit odd sight wrapped in a voluminous cloak made out of yards and yards of yellow and black fabric. It was an eccentric outfit for sure, but she was the antithesis of the “skin is in” theme most women at the ceremony adhered to.
Her costume wasn’t the only surprising thing about her performance. Ms. Hill began with her debut album’s title cut, choosing to sing the introspective “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” instead of one of her singles or more popular album cuts. The song was a clear statement from the artist who ended that segment of her set with the lyrics, “And I made up my mind / To define my own destiny.”
With her statement made, it was time to turn up. Lauryn ripped into “Lost Ones” while her hype man and the band got lit and the audience followed suit. The energy in the building was high when she brought out her son, up-and-coming reggae artist YG Marley, to perform his new single “Survival” and his hit song “Praise Jah In The Moonlight.” YG may have been very laid back, but surprise guest Wyclef Jean brought the excitement back when Hill welcomed him to the stage.
With the Haiti flag in one hand and a microphone in the other, Wyclef joined Lauryn to perform the Fugees’ classic “Fu-Gee-La” for the raucous audience who was all on their feet by this point. Ms. Hill and Mr. Jean were locked in and commanded the stage together just like they did back in the day.
Ms. Lauryn Hill’s appearance on the BET Awards 2024, and the show itself, ended on this high note. The epic performance was a preview of what concertgoers can expect on The Miseducation Anniversary Tour 2024, which will be co-headlined by Lauryn and Fugees and feature YG Marley and special guests. After this impressive showing, be sure to purchase tickets so that you don’t miss this exciting experience in person.
