Moses Sumney might’ve just made his motion picture debut in MaXXXine, but his summer is far from over. The singer-songwriter teased the beginnings of a new project when he dropped his single “Vintage” last month. Now, he’s announced the upcoming release of his new EP Sophcore alongside the release of its next single “Gold Coast.”

“Gold Coast” is another collaboration between Moses and producer quickly, quickly that veers slightly away from what we’ve come to expect from him. This time, they mix in a bit of modern R&B’s amelodic production, stripping the song’s beginning to programmed kicks and breathy percussive sounds. Melody is slowly woven into the song’s makeup as it progresses, however, as different instruments — including a Spanish guitar, electronic keys and space-aged synths that add a haunting quality to everything — are brought into the mix.

Moses’ unique vocals are on full display here as well, with him switching between a spoken cadence on the verses and singing on the bridges and chorus. Lyrically, he tells the story of a chance encounter that evolves into an electric attraction that could become so much more.

“Met you in the club, coast of the dub / Crew in the cut and they’re waitin’ on me / Locks like leaves bouncin’ in the breeze / Tuggin’ on my sleeve like can we leave,” he lays it out on the opening verse. “Midnight skin, blueberry hue / Lie by you by the blue bayou / Speak no fear / Now we’re here.”
