Mayer Hawthorne gave us another stellar effort with For All Time last October (and a release of the album’s instrumentals just last month). But if you know Mayer, you know the singer-songwriter isn’t content with leaving us hanging for long. He shows us that once again with the release of his latest single “Love Goes.”
“Love Goes” is a slinky number that has Mayer’s signature retro feel. It begins with a light touch on the production end. Drums, bass and the slightest twinkle of piano keys ease us into things as he sings of a situation that could unexpectedly blossom into a full-blown thing. But it’s when he takes us to the chorus that everything opens up to a fuller arrangement — including the addition of a full horn section.
Meanwhile, he speaks to the delight of an unforeseen love affair. “That’s the way love goes / Never crossed my mind / It’s funny how love grows / Hit me right on time,” he sings on the chorus. “Guess that’s the way love goes / Never saw the signs, but baby / Much to my surprise / It’s sitting right before my eyes.”
“Love Goes” is classic Mayer Hawthorne and sounds so good. But does it mean that there’s more new music where it came from? We’ll just have to wait and see. But let’s live in the now and stream “Love Goes” to our heart’s content below.
