Eric Roberson started the year strong with the back-to-back release of the singles “Here For You” in January and “You” in February – and that was after he dropped three solo songs last year. He now returns to match his 2023 output with the introspective new single “Mask.”
Erro co-wrote “Mask” with Jairus “JMo” Mozee and Daniel Crawford and co-produced the track with Brett “B Dubb” Baker and Zachariah “SlimKat78” McGant. With all those talented artists in the mix, the “Lessons” singer delivers more soul food for thought over a laid-back beat, bass and organ.
Roberson embodies a man who has come to a point in his life where he is ready to retire his representative and be true to himself on “Mask.” He reflects throughout the song and confronts the man in the mirror, ready to make a change.
“I can’t wear this mask any longer / I don’t feel I’m getting stronger / Had it on so long, I don’t recognize who I am,” he sings at a crossroads. “The world doesn’t really know me / And whenever I try to show me / They scratch their heads cause they don’t even know really who I am / Allow me the time to introduce who I am to me once again.”
The process of writing this song really affected Erro. “This was probably my hardest song to write and record this year,” he admitted on Instagram. “Even though I didn’t feel this was my story, I dove deep into the character. I cried throughout the entire process.”
Eric Roberson might have taken the mask off, but he is on point as usual. Listen to “Mask” right here, and be sure to catch Erro on his ongoing 30th Anniversary Tour, which has upcoming dates in Baltimore, Boston, St. Louis, Chicago and many more cities through the end of the year.
