Noochie has been pulling artists from go-go to gospel to perform on his Live From The Front Porch series, but he’s found his sweet spot with R&B. Some of our favorite vocalists have appeared on the production to sing down and prove that R&B is very much alive. The latest to pop up on the porch to display their chops is Craig David who traveled across the Atlantic from London to Washington, D.C. and brought his catalog of joints and jams with him.
After Noochie stepped out to introduce him, Craig did a quick vocal warm-up before jumping into his 2002 jam “What’s Your Flava?” from his sophomore album Slicker Than Your Average. He stayed in his throwback bag with more jams – his 1999 collab with Artful Dodger “Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)” and his hit debut solo single “Fill Me In.”
Following that energetic trio of songs, David decided to slow it down a little to sing “Walking Away.” He removed his jacket like he was ready to turn up again, but he kept the groove mellow with his Kaytranada collab “GOT IT GOOD” from Kaytra’s debut album 99.9%. His bandmate on keytar and talkbox helped him to add some extra sauce to the song with an interpolation of Zapp & Roger’s “Computer Love.”
David dipped back to his first album Born To Do It and stayed there for the remainder of his performance. He broke us off with “Can’t Be Messin’ Around,” “Last Night,” “Follow Me,” “Rendezvous” and DJ Premier’s remix of “7 Days.” He then circled back to reprise “Fill Me In” to sing a remixed rendition. Craig was deep in a zone and spit a hot 16 to show off more of his talents. He joked that he was about to start beatboxing but decided to hold back. He didn’t hold back for his big finish, though, as he revisited “7 Days” to sing the original version to end his killer set.
One thing is for sure and two things are for certain, Craig David’s mic was on and he sounded incredible on Live From The Front Porch. He damn-near did a whole concert on the lawn during his mind-blowing performance. Even Noochie himself considers Craig’s turn on his porch “one of the best performances” he’s seen yet.
