Trevor Jackson Applies Pressure From The Sidelines On New EP ‘He Don’t Know’

A wise man once said, if you ain’t first, you’re last. However, playing second position temporarily doesn’t seem to be a problem for singer-actor Trevor Jackson on his latest EP, He Don’t Know. The five-track project deals with matters of the heart — mainly all the ways he’s a better option than the next man.

Jackson gets straight to the point in the EP’s opener “Be What You Want.” The self-penned tune finds him trying to convince his boo to drop her current man like a hot potato by letting her know all the ways he could upgrade her life. The list is lengthy as he promises her anything she wants ranging from gifts to some good ol’ late-night back-breaking to a listening ear.

“If I made you swim, girl, would you survive it? / I’ll do whatever it’s gone take to get you higher / I’ll listen to you when you be talking / I’ll be there for you, I will / I’m more than just a bag or purse / I’ll be your club and your church,” he sings over the midtempo track.

He continues making his case on the EP’s Afrobeats-influenced title track, which he dropped earlier this spring. At the time, Trevor admitted that much of the song’s inspiration came from real-life experiences where he found himself in the sneaky link position. “That’s happened to be me before, quite a few times, so I wrote about it. It’s basically like, ‘Hey, let’s not do too much. As long as things stay secret, we can continue our arrangement. But if you blow the spot up, it’s over,” he explained.

By the EP’s third entry, Jackson takes a much more direct approach as he tires of being the side piece and takes his concerns to directly to the other man on “Happy Home.” He doesn’t mince words while insisting he didn’t set out to ruin a relationship. Though he insists he comes in peace, Jackson clearly is choosing violence as he fills his competition in on his situationship. “I ain’t trying to break up your happy home / But she hit me right back when she’s alone / You claiming that’s your main piece / But that ain’t what she told me,” he taunts.

The EP’s closers — “Remember The Time” and “Jog Your Memory” — find the crooner ramping up his efforts to move into pole position in the race to capture his lady’s heart. The former has him laying it all on the line and revealing the fact that, quite frankly, it’s about more than just sex for him. This theme carries over into “Jog Your Memory,” where he is joined by the EP’s only guest, singer Haben. He reminds his boo about how they are locked in on all levels, making him the only correct choice going forward.

He Don’t Know is the follow-up to Jackson’s previous EP Heads Up, which was released this past March. Though the songs sometimes veer into grown-and-sexy territory, Jackson has presented a collection of radio-friendly material that has something for both the daytime and nighttime listening hours.
