Maeta and Kaytranada go together like butter and toast, and there’s no denying it. Their fruitful relationship started when he laced her with “Teen Scene” from her EP Habits and continued with “Questions” from last year’s When I Call Your Name. Now the twosome is making Maetranada official with her upcoming EP Endless Night, which is exclusively produced by Kaytra, and the set’s lead single “DJ Got Me.”
As to be expected, the beat here is superb. It features some of Kaytranada’s signatures, including an elastic bass and kick drum combo coupled with waves icy synth to cool down some of the track’s dance floor heat. Maeta’s not to be outshined, however, as she rides the production while she sings of a DJ who’s got her stuck in his groove.
The magic the DJ is creating is enough for her to party until the wee hours and even interpolate a bit of Indeep’s seminal classic “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life.” But it’s her words that ring out on the chorus as she begs her friends not to disturb her groove, simply singing, “The DJ got me / Just leave without me / The beat is talkin’ / The time won’t stop me, no.”
It’s clear that Maeta and Kaytranada have an unshakeable chemistry. And with songwriters like Fallon King and James Fauntleroy also said to be contributing their respective pen games to the set, we’re sure Endless Night will be worth staying up for. We’ll know for sure when the EP arrives on Friday, June 21st.
