The Chi lives! No, we’re not referring to Lena Waithe’s hit drama The Chi currently in its sixth season on Showtime. We’re talking about the R&B supergroup announced in 2021 by Chicago-bred singers Carl Thomas, Dave Hollister and Donell Jones. We expected big things from The Chi over the past three years, but we feared that they might have gone the way of mask mandates once the pandemic ended. However, the group just had to regroup and make some adjustments. Now they’ve resurfaced, and Donell is out and Chi-town soul sista Syleena Johnson is in as the newest member of The Chi.

Thomas, Hollister and Johnson made headlines over the weekend when they made their official debut as the remixed supergroup at the taping of this year’s Black Music Honors in Atlanta. The trio performed and even wore coordinating outfits to let folks know that they’re standing on R&B business.

Syleena broke the news to the general public on social media. “Welp, the cat is out the bag in a good way,” she captioned a photo of her standing in between Carl and Dave on Instagram and Facebook. “I am officially a part of an R&B trio that is SURE to shake the table in R&B music‼️ It’s an honor to be able to share the stage with these two vocal Giants‼️ So THIS is our next Chapter and we couldn’t be more ready.”

We couldn’t be more ready for this updated version of The Chi either. We’re excited to hear what Syleena, Dave and Carl sound like together, and we’ll soon get the chance when the 2024 Black Music Honors airs during Black Music Month. The special will premiere on Saturday, June 1st on the Stellar Network before airing on Bounce TV on Juneteenth, Wednesday, June 19th and going into national broadcast syndication throughout the month of June.

The Chi hasn’t indicated why Donell Jones departed or when they’ll be dropping any music, but we hope that it’s all love between the artists and have our fingers crossed that with this announcement and performance, some new tunes will follow. Their future release will be the trio’s official debut single. The original version of the group popped up on Jones’ “Karma (Remix)” alongside RL and Jacquees but nothing materialized past that remix.

While we wait and speculate about The Chi’s music moves, Carl is making his way around the country on Tank’s The R&B Money Tour and Syleena is busy promoting her latest single “Black Balloon.”
