Doechii has thoroughly impressed and quickly become one the most innovative new voices in rap. Her brash approach and undeniable skill and talent have already given us jams like “Persuasive,” “What It Is (Block Boy)” and “Booty Drop.” The Florida-born rapper isn’t done giving us heat, either. She’s now linked up with City Girls standout JT for her newest jam “Alter Ego.”
“Alter Ego” begins with a raucous electronic dance-influenced beat alternating between smooth, steady synth keys on the verses and more ragged, distorted synths and drums on the chorus. It’s the perfect backdrop for Doechii to talk her s**t with skillful glee.
“D-O-E, I’m Wakanda rich / Big Doechii, diva, Donda, Don Dada / Tokyo Honda drift,” she rhymes on her verse. “Uh, n****s tweakin’, h**s is geekin’ / P***y poppin’, Doechii season / New persona, new vagina / Push back but I’m still gon’ get that.”
JT matches Doechii’s energy on her verse, at one point mirroring her flow to show that these two ladies can hold their own among their peers and perhaps beyond. And just to show that she’s got even more to show, Doechii also makes sure to flex her singing chops on the song’s bridge near the end of the track.
For the song’s video, the ladies take us to the swamp. It’s there that Doechii shows us why she’s called the Swamp Princess as she throws a party filled with backwater tropes. She and JT embrace these stereotypes with racy fashions and defiant attitudes as they dare us to challenge their mutual status as that b***h.
