It’s been over 20 years since Ruben Studdard won season two of American Idol, and he continues to win. Studdard released his latest album The Way I Remember It last fall, he recently wrapped a successful tour with Clay Aiken and just last week he welcomed his second child with his wife Kristin Moore-Studdard. Before the singer went on paternity leave, he paid a visit to Washington, D.C. where pulled up to Noochie’s Live From The Front Porch for a pop-up performance on the growing live concert series.
After a quick introduction from our host Noochie, Ruben stepped out of the front door with a red plastic cup in hand. We’re not sure what he was sipping on, but his vocals chords were good and lubricated as he jumped right into the Luther Vandross classic “Superstar.” Studdard sang the song during his stint on American Idol and later released a cover of on his 2003 debut album Soulful. The Velvet Teddy Bear sounded as good now as he did back then.
Ruben stayed with Soulful for the second song in his set, his debut single “Flying Without Wings.” He next brought us up to date with the song “Masterpiece” from his new project and added a go-go remix to the track for its second half. Big Rube was in the pocket, and Noochie even remerged from the house to add a few ad-libs.
Studdard ended his performance with his hit “Sorry 2004.” We kinda hoped that he would have updated the lyrics to 2024, but it’s only a minor gripe. He sounded amazing from the first note to the last, and that’s all that matters.
