It’s almost time for our boy Usher to shine at this year’s Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show. We’re all anxious to see the electrifying show he’ll bring to the stage. We’re also in for a treat just before that fateful day as his upcoming album COMING HOME will be released on Friday, February 9th. Ahead of the anticipated project’s release, Ursh stokes the excitement with his latest single “Ruin.”
“Ruin” finds Usher hopping on to the Afrobeats wagon with a slick groove produced by Nigerian producer/singer-songwriter Pheelz — who also volunteers a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it guest verse on the track. The smooth cut rides on organ and percolating drums that keep things at a danceable mid-tempo. Usher, meanwhile, taps into his sensitive side as he points out how his former flame has made finding love again almost impossible.
“Yeah, you broke me and took your time with it / Yeah, you gave me all these memories that I regret,” he sings sweetly on the first verse. “All I can do is congratulate ’cause you / Ruin me for everybody / Yeah, you ruin me for everybody.”
This wouldn’t be an Usher release without a music video, and this one comes with a special annotation. The Dave Meyers-directed clip was filmed entirely with an iPhone 15 Pro (it should also be noted that Apple sponsors the Super Bowl Halftime Show). It’s a nice ad for the phone’s camera, as it captures all of Usher’s moves as he dances around an immaculately decorated house with several different women only to leave them hanging a la “U Remind Me.” The clip isn’t only about him breaking hearts, though. It ends with Usher spending quality time with his favorite girl, daughter Sovereign Bo, who obviously has him wrapped around her little finger.
While “Ruin” is a nice addition to Usher’s catalog, it remains to be seen if it will make the cut for what’s sure to be a spectacular showing at the Super Bowl. In case it does, though, get familiar with the performer’s latest by streaming the single and watching its video below.
