For Bey Bright, Soul Nostalgia is more than the name of his popular EP series. Those two words shape his sound and musical persona as the self-proclaimed “Bad Boy of Indie Soul.” The singer, songwriter, producer and independent label owner has been on his grind, and he’s sharing the fruit of his labor with the back-to-back-to-back release of three new singles – “Tell Me,” “Love You Down” and “Anything You Want.”

Bright shouts out Soul Nostalgia at the beginning of “Tell Me,” and this song delivers vintage vibes by the pound. Sonically, it feels like a lost R&B cut from the late-’80s while Bey promises the world to a pretty young thing throughout the lyrics. He seals the throwback deal on the bridge with an old-school phone call to this cutie on duty that will bring Michel’le’s “No More Lies” to mind.

For “Love You Down,” Bey moves into ’90s R&B territory with a mid-tempo groove that you can two-step or body roll to. Our leading man has romance on his mind as he showers his leading lady with sweet compliments. “You’re my sugar and spice / You’re my everything nice / You don’t have to think twice / Girl, I’ll always be around,” he sings to his boo thang. On this track, he finds inspiration from Evelyn “Champagne” King with a brief interpolation of her hit “Love Come Down” on the bridge.

Bey stays in his ’90s R&B bag on “Anything You Want.” With a drum pattern similar to Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit,” he’s once again romancing the object of his desire and fulfilling all of her desires. “If you want it, you can get it / If I got it, you can have it,” we hear on the chorus, as he lets his woman know that she doesn’t have to worry about a thing. He’s saying all the right things in the lyrics, but what sets this track apart and really sets it off is the addition of a saxophone to the mix.
