Yussef Dayes closed a pivotal year in his career with a stunning performance on COLORS. The South London-bred multi-instrumentalist treated new and seasoned fans to a riveting rendition of his aptly titled track “Chasing The Drum.”
Against a bronze-tinged backdrop, adorned in one of his signature knit hats and styled by stylist Karen Binns, Dayes captures our attention even before the first shot is played. Noting his energy as he approaches and settles within the full drum set, it’s clear he’s about his business and we are in for something truly special. The precision and intensity with which he plays is truly palpable and we feel every beat deep within our music-loving souls. For nearly four minutes, viewers will find it impossible to look away and soon realize the elusive “stank face” has involuntarily spread across our faces, signifying pure, funk-filled delight.
“Chasing The Drum” is just one of the standout tracks on Dayes’ debut solo album Black Classical Music. The project dropped back in September and was met with critical acclaim. Via social media, he dedicated the album to and notes inspiration from his family, his ancestors, musicians that have come before him and everyone that has supported him along his journey. He says, “Music has been my way of channeling this thing we call life. Whether it be grieving, a healing, love, anger, this is where I channel my spirit.” We feel every ounce of his passion in this latest performance and his recordings, and we are grateful to him for sharing his gift.
