The Color Purple movie musical will soon be upon us as its Christmas Day release draws near. As we prepare ourselves for that, we’ve gotten a preview of what’s coming thanks to last week’s release of the film’s soundtrack Music From And Inspired By The Color Purple. We now get some of our first glimpses of the film outside of the trailer in the video for “Lifeline,” the song from Alicia Keys that serves as the album’s lead single.
The clip opens up with Alicia at her trusty piano playing the song’s opening notes. She’s dressed in a regal white number made of lace and satin that looks absolutely stunning. That is a trend for the looks in the video, with the singer wearing a cavalcade of gorgeous gowns throughout the visual’s length. She appears in a daring silver number while standing in a tree inspired by a scene from the film, a flowing, multi-colored silk dress in a windswept scene and, finally, in a structured, icy white gown that offers up dramatics that match some of the movie’s scenes interspersed throughout the film.
Speaking of the scenes, we get a glimpse into the joys and pains the movie will bring us. We’re also given some of the biggest indications that this will, indeed, be a movie musical. We see crowds dancing on dirt roads, Taraji P. Henson’s dramatic entrance as Shug Avery while taking a boat ride to the juke joint and even a glimpse of Fantasia Barrino’s Celie and Shug dancing together in what appears to be a dream sequence.
The Color Purple looks to be the movie event of the season and “Lifeline” seems to usher in its arrival quite nicely. Watch Alicia Keys stun us with her glamour when you press play.
