Tinashe has wasted no time ushering us into her latest era. The singer first gave us a clue that her new album BB/ANG3L was on its way when she dropped the trippy alt-R&B groove “Talk To Me Nice” at the end of July. She soon followed that release with her bouncy track “Needs” to show that, though she’s headed in a new direction sound-wise, she’s still got the capacity to create a breezy bop. Now the album is finally upon us, and she’s celebrating its arrival with a video for her track “Uh Huh.”
“Uh Huh” finds the singer getting quite vulnerable as she sighs between the synth notes of the lovestruck trap ballad produced by Kurzweil. “Uh-huh / How do you see me underneath it all? / How? / When you’re lookin’ at me, somehow I feel exposed,” she coos. ”And I never expected this is how it would go / It was just for the plot, but baby, I’m back for more.”
That vulnerability and the song’s wavy feel are artfully explored in the track’s music video. We see the star posing it up for the camera in a curve-hugging black outfit and dramatically oversized gloves. Her Long, honey blonde tresses flow in the wind, complemented by her choice of gold jewelry that picks up on the warm tones of her skin. She opts not to perform the song at all in the clip, instead letting the song blow over her like the wind that picks up her hair in its breeze. Still, it’s an arresting visual all the same.
“Uh Huh” is one of only seven tracks on BB/ANG3L. The pared-down nature of the set means that Tinashe wastes no time on filler on the project. Each track comes with its own unique vibe and finds ’Nashe delving into more experimental waters as she plays with electronic and dance sounds to forge her own unique vibe.
