Love has Charlotte Day Wilson dazed and confused on her new single “Forever.” She doesn’t know if she’s staying or leaving on this moody duet where she’s joined by fellow singer-songwriter Snoh Aalegra in the role of her partner.
“Forever” begins with its chorus, which sets the tone. “I’m living lost in love ’cause I change my mind too much / Forever’s not enough, forever’s not enough,” Charlotte sings, admitting one of her faults and contemplating the future of their relationship. She follows with doubt (“There’s no promise you can make / To keep a hold of us”) and indecisiveness (“Before you were mine / I couldn’t decide / Wrong from what was right”) before Snoh calls her out.
“Tell me can I ever believe you? Tell me? / ’Cause you change your mind whenever I need you, baby / I’m out of my mind every time that I take you back, you know?” Aalegra sings on her verse, tired of the chaos. Despite this, neither one is ready to walk away, content with their cycle of discontent.
Built on a foundation of piano, synth, programmed drums and a sample of The Foundations’ 1967 song “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You,” “Forever” sounds downright intoxicating. Charlotte Day Wilson co-produced the track with Jack Rochon who was also one of her co-writers alongside Snoh, Leon Thomas and Amy Allen.
“Forever” is Day Wilson’s first single of 2023. She first popped up on our radar thanks to her Canadian brethren Daniel Caesar tapping her vocals for the track “Transform” from his album Freudian. We’ve been locked in ever since, especially after she dropped her debut album ALPHA and its deluxe edition in 2021, which featured the hauntingly sexy duet “Take Care Of You” with Syd (and later King Princess, Amaarae and Meshell Ndegeocello on the track’s remix).
As for Snoh, she has provided the soundtrack to our Soft Life Summer with a trio of love songs – “Be My Summer,” “Sweet Tea” and “Wait A Little Longer” – and this duet with Charlotte, as lovesick as it is, fits right in sonically.
