Usher has been having one hell of a run these past two years thanks to his hot ticket Las Vegas residency — with that run even extending to an upcoming stint in Paris starting next month. But he’s not just into performing his past colossal hits for audiences. He’s also been securing his legacy by releasing new music, like his most recent single “GLU.” He’s back at it again and bringing Summer Walker and 21 Savage in tow for his latest single “Good Good.”
“Good Good” is all about emotional maturity, with Usher letting an ex know that, although they’ve split, he’s still got love for her and wishes her the best in life. Production duo Mel & Mus lace him with a mid-tempo groove slightly reminiscent of his past Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz collab “Lovers And Friends,” though they add a bit of brightness to keep it out of bedroom territory.
“I hate that we didn’t make it to forever / Probably ain’t gettin’ back together / But that don’t mean that I can’t wish you better / We ain’t good good, but we still good,” Ursh sings on the chorus. “I realize that I can’t be your lover / Let’s just keep it honest with each other / I’ll be happy for you when you find another / We ain’t good good, but we still good.”
Summer Walker, who previously collaborated with Usher on her “You Make Me Wanna”-sampling song “Come Thru,” joins in on this mature approach to breaking up for the second verse. “No smoke with me, I promise, boy, I don’t do drama / It didn’t work, but I hope you find another,” she sings before wishing him peace, good sex and good sleep.
Her thoughts flow nicely with 21 Savage’s rap, on which he reminisces about their time together while still keeping it moving. He’s not afraid to go back a step though, as he rhymes, “Relationships don’t always last, but let’s not turn it to beef / I come through from time to time and have you grabbin’ them sheets.”
“Good Good” isn’t necessarily Usher at the level of his Confessions heyday, but it definitely shows that he can still hang. Give the track a listen when you press play right here, and then check out the song’s smartphone-themed visualizer below.
