Jamila Woods is getting ready to usher her newest musical work Water Made Us into the world. She gave us our first listen to the project with the intimate “Tiny Garden.” Now shs back in a bit of a bigger way with the set’s second official single “Boomerang.”
The Chicago native teamed with British singer-songwriter NAO and songwriter/producers GRADES and George Moore for writing and production duties this time around. They give her a number with an upbeat feel thanks to ’80s-inspired synth lines and chugging programmed drums. It results in a deceptional good time that will make listeners want to dance.
We say it’s deceptional because the lyrics themselves point to a slightly sad situation as Jamila tries to navigate the whims and withdrawal of an uncertain lover. While she’s hoping that they’ll stick around, it seems they’re constantly running hot and cold and playing with her emotions. It’s enough to prompt her to question if they’re really feeling her rhythm on the song’s chorus.
“I think you really wanna dance with me / How could you really wanna dance with me? / Do you really wanna dance? (If you don’t like me then, you won’t like me now),” she sings.“You wanna have another dance with me / So you really wanna dance with me? / Should I be giving you a chance? (If you dot like me then, you won’t like me now).”
The song’s video takes the title literally, with it being filmed almost entirely backwards with occasional moments of actions repeating like a Boomerang on Instagram. We start with her at the laundry doing a wash, rinse and lots of repeating while rocking a trench coat. Things soon morph for the glamorous, however, as the single reveals a sparkly top while morphing into a Josephine Baker-esque burlesque dancer. She’s soon ready to show us what she’s got (while still moving in reverse) as she takes us from the bar and back to the stage before the curtains close.
“Boomerang” sounds and looks like something that will have us constantly coming back for more. Get into the stream and visual of the latest from Jamila Woods when you head below.
