While the majority of the United States is currently under an extreme heat advisory, Mayer Hawthorne keeps it cool as ever on his new single. Right on time for these record-breaking temperatures, he invites us to take a dip in “The Pool.”

Mayer’s vivid lyrics bring the dog days of summer to life on the smooth soul cut. When he sings, “Temperature rising, and we’re ’bout to explode / It’s too hot, too hot / We’re burning up, and we can’t take it no more / It’s too hot, too hot,” you can literally feel the sun beating down on you and sweat dripping from everywhere.

Hawthorne brings some relief to the chorus by suggesting a much-needed swim to cool off. He catches a groove over bass, percussion, horns and layered background vocals as he sings, “And we’ll get real cool / Cool, in the water / Jump in and swim / Wash all our sins away / Hey hey / Yeah we’ll get real cool / In the pool / Reach nirvana.”

It’s been almost three years since we’ve heard from Mayer – or his funkdafied disco side project Tuxedo for that matter. December 2020 was the last time we got something from him on the solo tip or as part of the duo. That month, Tuxedo released “Doin’ My Best,” and he dropped the compilation Rare Changes followed by a timely cover of “What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas” while we were in the midst of the pandemic. Mayer emerges out of the ashes of that global disaster a newly married man and with a new project hopefully on the way.
