We’re a couple weeks into the hot and sticky days of summer, and festival season is in full swing. That’s a good thing for our girls FLO, who have been hitting festival stages as often as possible as of late. When they’re not performing, they’re giving fans what they want. That includes the surprise EP 3 Of Us, which shocked fans when it was released this past Monday, July 3rd.
3 Of Us offers up a triple dose of brand new tracks (nope, “Fly Girl” doesn’t make the cut) to tide fans over as the trio continues work on their upcoming debut album. The three tracks continue the pop/R&B stylings that have earned them a place in the current music zeitgeist, with plenty of sass and decidedly spicy lyrics aimed at men who take their hearts for granted.
First up is “Control Freak,” a kiss-off to a man whom the ladies just met but is already trying to assert authority over their lives. With moody production that sounds like it’s straight out of 2003, the ladies step to him on the chorus, singing, “I might let you hold me / But I ain’t tryna be with no control freak / How’d you get to thinkin’ that you own me?”
“Change,” meanwhile, moves to a sweeter groove laden with synth strings that are reminiscent of Ne-Yo’s “So Sick.” Rather than being lovesick, however, they play the role of a woman passing on advice about a no-good man. “He’ll never change,” they warn on the chorus. “No matter what you say or do / He’ll never change.”
The final song is the title track “3 Of Us,” on which the ladies reteam with MNEK as a writer and producer. He gives them a scandalous tale as they come together to realize they’re all being played by the same man. This love quadrangle isn’t sustainable, obviously, as the ladies come to the conclusion that they need to move on.
We’re not moving on from FLO, however. In fact, 3 Of Us is only making us want to hear whatever they’ve got coming next much, much more.
