The second season of the hit STARZ show Run The World is currently airing and has us home every Friday night to keep up with the now trio of girlfriends at the heart of the show’s story. It also has us listening closely to the soundtrack, which is once again overseen by esteemed musicians Robert Glasper and Derrick Hodge. Just as they did last season, the two provide the score for the series as well as contribute a few original songs. On that note, Robert brings in his good friend Emily King on the first single from the Season 2 soundtrack “What Love Can Do.”
“What Love Can Do” seems a little too quiet for the brash trio of ladies that Run The World centers around at first listen. However, if you’ve been following this season, then the song’s themes of love’s quiet power should resonate. The song conveys that perfectly with an arrangement of guitar, organ and brushed snare that’s ripe for Emily to work her vocal magic. She tells the story of a woman longing for a love she fears might be lost yet hoping that there’s a chance to rekindle what was.
“Can I believe my heart? / When we’re miles apart / Wishing on a lonely star wondering about you,” she sings on the chorus. “Only the time will tell / As the wishing well / Let it go and watch what love can do.”
We won’t spoil which character on the show this song most aligns with, but we will say that the song plays at a pivotal moment in the show’s newest episode. But even if you don’t follow the series, this song should hit you right in the feels. Listen to the beautiful music that Robert Glasper and Emily King make together when you press play on “What Love Can Do” below.
