Coco O. Debates If She Can Build A Life With ‘Someone Younger’

Women these days are waiting until later in life to start families than their counterparts a generation ago. While that can be great for their personal and professional lives, the fact still remains that they have a more limited scope if and when they decide to start families. This fact isn’t often the subject of most songs, but “Many Ways” singer Coco O. approaches the topic with the release of her latest single “Somebody Younger.”

The title might imply a sexy fling, but the ballad actually deals with the real concerns of a woman dating a younger man who might not be on the same page she is. The verses find her wondering whether good lovin’ is enough for her to stay or if she should move on to someone who’s more ready for what she wants.

“I don’t wanna waste my time / On someone who’ll maybe never become ready / I don’t wanna waste my time / I don’t wanna do this on my own,” she sings on the chorus. “I don’t wanna waste my time, honey / Lovin’ you is beautiful / But I’m out of time.”

It’s a very real sentiment that Coco O. conveys beautifully. It’s also helped by her constant collaborator August Rosenbaum, who provides a thoughtful, piano-driven backdrop. The duo also work in other elements, including a bit of organ, muted trumpet and tightly layered backing vocals, that are reminiscent of R&B ballads from the ’90s and early 2000s.

With this and “Many Ways” being released so close together, we think it’s safe to say that Coco O. is cooking up something special. We’ll gladly wait until she’s ready to reveal that project. Until then, you can listen to “Someone Younger” when you press play below.
