Terrace Martin is one of those people who doesn’t know how to not be busy. The multi-instrumentalist and producer stays in demand, whether it be producing for others, his jazz supergroup Dinner Party (who just happened to release an album in April) or working on his own projects. He’s back at it again with the announcement of his upcoming album Fine Tune and the release of the set’s lead single, an instrumental cover of SZA’s SOS album cut “Snooze.”
Terrace is no stranger to an instrumental cover of hip-hop and R&B, so his handling of “Snooze” is just as adept as you would think. He takes on the track with his trusty sax in tow, matching SZA’s stream-of-consciousness flow note for note on the sax as he channels her unique style. Other instruments help round out the sound, of course, but the saxophone is the star here as it soars, dips and coasts in the pocket of the song’s groove before taking off running in an impressive solo at the song’s end.
Fine Tune will mark the first in a series of six albums coming through a partnership between BMG and Terrace’s own label, Sounds Of Crenshaw. Speaking on the venture, BMG's SVP of Repertoire & Marketing said, “Terrace is an extremely talented, influential, and highly respected creator and protector of the Culture. There is an authenticity and attention to detail in his creative approach that is undeniable. With Terrace at the helm, Sounds Of Crenshaw is the future of Jazz.”
We’re anxious to see and hear the fruits of this collaboration in the years to come. As for Fine Tune, we already know it will land in our collection when it’s released on Friday, June 9th. Check out his take on “Snooze” when you press play.
