The last time we got a new release from crooner Ruben Studdard was in 2018 when he gave the people what they wanted with the release of his collection of Luther Vandross covers. After taking some time to regroup and find a new label home, the American Idol winner returns with a new single, “The Way I Remember It.”

On the song, Studdard recounts the story of how he and his love found each other from his perspective. He begins by recalling the day they met and how he automatically assumed she had a man at home. However, after noticing her empty ring finger, he eventually approached her and the rest seems to be history.

“Do you remember it like I do? / Where we were when I laid eyes on you / The very first day of the rest of my life / And I was forever yours and you were mine,” he sings in that crystal-clear voice that earned him the top spot of Idol’s second season.

Written and produced by Belewa Muhammad, the tender ballad is clearly inspired by the classic Luther balladry in songs like “Here and Now.” Much like that song, “The Way I Remember It” is also filled with the type of big, soaring vocals and heartfelt sentiment that are sure to make this a popular selection at weddings in the future.

“The Way I Remember It” is the first single from his upcoming album, which is currently slated for a September release on the SRG/ILS Group label. Besides his new project, fans can also look forward to seeing him on tour when he and fellow American Idol contestant Clay Aiken embark on their Ruben & Clay Twenty Years | One Night Tour. The 42-date tour will commemorate the two decades since their careers were launched on the reality competition.
