Missy Elliott is racking up accolades and honors in 2023. She’s already set to be fêted at the 8th Annual Black Music Honors this month and inducted into the new class of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame later this year. Now, the National Museum Of African American Music has announced that Elliott will receive their Rhapsody & Rhythm Award and be celebrated at the 2023 Celebration Of Legends.

Described as “an evening of musical tributes that celebrates African American musical and cultural trailblazers who have made iconic contributions to American music across all genres,” this year’s Celebration Of Legends benefit concert will honor the multihyphenate entertainer along with her longtime label home Atlantic Records. Missy and Atlantic Records will join previous recipients of NMAAM’s Rhapsody & Rhythm Award, including Little Richard, Quincy Jones, Chaka Khan, Lionel Richie, Charlie Wilson, Shirley Caesar and Cece Winans.

The full list of guests and performers hasn’t been announced yet, but Sylvia Rhone, current chairwoman/CEO of Epic Records who worked extensively with Missy throughout her career, and Mya, who performed on the epic “Lady Marmalade” cover that Elliott co-produced, will both be on hand to give the icon her flowers.

The private, invite-only ceremony is scheduled to take place in Nashville at the museum on Friday, June 2nd, kicking off Black Music Month at NMAAM in grand fashion. The 2023 Celebration Of Legends is sponsored by Nissan, Atlantic Records and Amazon.
