It’s easy to get hooked on Kevin Ross. With his divine vocals, impressive pen and catalog of soulful R&B songs, he feeds our need for contemporary male R&B singers who evoke our favorite artists of the past. The DMV native continues to supply us with jams on his latest release, Midnight Microdose, Vol. 1.
The first in a planned two-EP series that will culminate in the release of a full-length Midnight Microdose album later this year, Vol. 1 is a short but sweet treat at just 11 minutes long. Prior to the project’s release, Ross dropped three of the six-track set’s songs – “Look My Way,” “Show & Prove” and “First Dose.” Those singles combine with the remaining three tracks to create a satisfying mood-setter.
Kevin opens with “First Dose,” which serves as an introduction to the EP and series. He experiments with altering the pitch of his speaking voice while singing a sultry invitation. He keeps it sexy on “Show & Prove” with flirtatious promises that he can show what he can do better than the rest. Kev stays in that zone and is in love with the “Cocoa” on the next track, which has an alluring island bop to it.
Ross follows that with “Look My Way” where he’s crushing on a young lady and shoots the sweetest of shots. He pauses his mood music with a brief interlude to sell himself on “Infomercial,” but we’re already sold on his many talents. He ends the set with the yearning love song “Don’t Pretend” and makes a convincing case for getting that old thing back with an ex.
Kevin Ross’ Midnight Microdose, Vol. 1 may be brief, but it’s a pleasurable musical high that already has us fiending for more. Stay tuned for the next fix when Midnight Microdose, Vol. 2 and the album Midnight Microdose arrive in the not-so-distant future.
