Summer is starting nearly a whole month early, and it’s thanks to KAYTRAMINÉ. The union between Kaytranada and Aminé let it be known that they were bringing the heat when they dropped “4EVA,” the lead single of their self-titled debut, back in April. Now, with mere days before the set’s arrival, the super duo is dropping off the album's latest single, a laid-back jam titled “Rebuke.”
“Rebuke,” which the fellas previewed at the end of the “4EVA” video, is based on two samples that are prominent throughout its short runtime — dreamy guitar from Brazilian singer-songwriter Lô Borges' 1979 track “Tudo Que Você Podia Ser” and vocals from Trina Broussard’s 1997 cover of Minnie Riperton’s “Inside My Love” from the Love Jones soundtrack. Kaytranada flips both songs together quite nicely, giving the track an unshakeable head-nod factor.
Aminé, of course, provides the lyrics. This go ’round, he decides to reflect on the end of a relationship and his feelings amid the split. “Givin’ up? I refuse / That’s the type of feelin’ I rebuke / My b***h like your lips, brand new / And it’s only ’cause we couldn’t make it through,” he sings on the chorus. Meanwhile, he namechecks pop culture couplings while reflecting on why he needs to move on.
“Excuses soundin’ like I need to find mysеlf / Just admit that this ain’t workin’, no respect was dealt,” he rhymes on the song’s only verse. “Can’t еven lie, it hurt to see you with someone else / But I know movin’ on is better than to sit and dwell.”
Though he might be experiencing some bumps along the romantic road, the song itself is one of the smoothest things we’ve heard all year (perhaps even pairing well with the subject matter and vibe of NxWorries’ “Where I Go”). It also signals that the sounds on KAYTRAMINÉ will be just as versatile as the dynamic duo.
Listen to “Rebuke” when you press play below and look for the album to arrive this Friday, May 19th.
